PIERRE BONNARD:  (1867 – 1947) was a French painter and printmaker.  The son of a prominent official of the French Ministry of War. At the insistence of his father, Bonnard studied law, graduating and practising as a barrister briefly. However, he had also attended art classes on the side, and soon decided to become an artist.

Bonnard is known for his intense use of color, especially via areas built with small brushmarks and close values. His often complex compositions—typically of sunlit interiors of rooms and gardens populated with friends and family members—are both narrative and autobiographical. His wife Marthe was an ever-present subject.  He also painted several self portraits, landscapes and still lives.

Bonnard did not paint from life but rather drew his subject—sometimes photographing it as well—and made notes on the colors. He then painted the canvas in his studio from his notes.

HENRIETTE WYETH HURD:  Henriette Wyeth Hurd (1907 – 1997) was an American artist noted for portraits and still life paintings. She was the wife of artist Peter Hurd, daughter of illustrator N.C. Wyeth and sister of artist Andrew Wyeth. She was also the mother of artist Michael Hurd. The Roswell Museum and Art Center, in Roswell, N.M., contains pieces of her art work in its collection.  Henriette painted portraits of such well know subjects as actress Helen Hayes, author Paul Horgan and First Lady Pat Nixon. Throughout her career, Henriette painted members of her family including her children Michael and Ann Carol. Capturing more than a likeness of her subjects, she positions the figure to be a design of her own creation. She loved painting children as an embodiment of innocence and youth which to her would not last forever.

HENRI-JEAN GUILLAUME MARTIN:  ( 1860- 1943). French painter. After winning the Grand Prix at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse, he moved to Paris (1879) to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts there under Jean-Paul Laurens, who encouraged his interest in Veronese and other Venetian painters. The literary inspiration of his early work was reflected in such paintings as Paolo de Malatesta and Francesca da Rimini in Hell (1883; Carcassonne, Mus. B.-A.) based on Dante, for which he won a medal at the Salon of 1883. During his subsequent study in Rome, however, on a fellowship awarded to him at the Salon, he was attracted both by the brilliant Italian light and by the paintings of Giotto and his contemporaries.
